About the South Africa Visa Medical

The South Africa Visa Medical is a dual-requirement process for foreign nationals applying for long-term temporary residence or permanent residency. Under the Immigration Act of South Africa, applicants must submit both a Medical Report (Form BI-811) and a Radiological Report (Form BI-806) to the Department of Home Affairs.

At the medical the Doctor will examine you and ask to see your medical history (NHS app is suitable) to check that you do not have any physical or mental health conditions or infectious diseases.

We will then issue a signed and stamped copy of the Republic of South Africa Medical Certificate on the same day

Who can apply?
Any non-South African national applying for a visa intended for a stay longer than 90 days. Note that while the medical (BI-811) is required for all ages, the Radiological Report (BI-806) is only mandatory for applicants aged 12 years and older (and is generally waived for pregnant women).

Eligible Visa Types:

  • General Work Visas & Critical Skills Work Visas
  • Study Visas (for university or school placement)
  • Retired Person Visas
  • Relative’s Visas (Long-term stay)
  • Permanent Residency Permits

Requirements & Official Guidance:
Both the medical and radiological reports must not be older than 6 months at the time of your application submission. For more information on documentation, please visit: South African Government: Temporary Residence Visas.

FAQs about our South Africa Visa Medical

Which types of visas require this medical for South Africa?

A medical certificate (BI-811) and radiological report (BI-806) are required for all Temporary Residence Visas (Work, Study, Exchange) exceeding 3 months and for all Permanent Residency applications. These are not required for standard 90-day tourist visits for UK passport holders.
You should book your medical 4–6 weeks before your visa appointment. Both the BI-811 and BI-806 forms have a validity of 6 months. Booking within this window ensures your paperwork remains valid even if there are minor delays in your visa processing.

The medical consultation takes roughly 20–30 minutes. If you require the radiological report, you will also need to attend a chest X-ray. Once the radiologist’s findings are returned to us, we can finalize both forms, typically within 2–4 working days.

These are the mandatory Department of Home Affairs forms. The BI-811 is the Medical Certificate (general health), and the BI-806 is the Radiological Report (Chest X-ray).
Yes. Anyone applying for a visa longer than 90 days must have a chest X-ray to rule out Tuberculosis. This is recorded on form BI-806.
Yes, the BI-811 form specifically asks the doctor to certify that you are not “mentally disordered.” Our doctors perform a brief screen to satisfy this requirement.
The medical and radiological reports must not be older than 6 months at the time of your application submission.
Yes, South African Home Affairs is very strict—they do not accept photocopies or digital signatures. We provide the original ink-signed and stamped forms for your application.
