About the China Visa Medical

The China Foreigner Physical Examination also known as China Visa Medical is mandatory for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Health Commission. It is an important component of the application for long-term visas, ensuring that all foreign nationals entering the country for employment or study are in good health and do not carry communicable diseases.

Who can apply?
Any individual applying for a visa to stay in China for more than 6 months (180 days). This is a standard requirement for expatriates moving for work, students pursuing degree programs, and those applying for permanent residency.

Requirements & Official Guidance:

Which types of China visas require this medical?

The Foreigner Physical Examination is required for all “Long Stay” visas (over 180 days). This includes the Z Visa (Work), X1 Visa (Study), and long-term family visas (S1 or Q1). Short-term business (M) or tourist (L) visas generally do not require this examination.

When should I book my medical?

You should book your medical within 6 months of your intended entry to China, as the form expires after 180 days. Most applicants book 4–8 weeks before their visa appointment to ensure all lab results and X-ray reports are back and the form is fully stamped.

How long does the appointment take and when do I get results?

The clinic appointment takes approximately 45–60 minutes due to the extensive list of checks required. Your final, stamped Foreigner Physical Examination Record—along with all original laboratory and X-ray reports—will be ready for collection or post within 3–5 working days.

Do I need an original ECG trace for my China medical?

Yes, the Chinese Embassy requires the actual paper printout of your Electrocardiogram (ECG) trace to be attached to your report. We provide the full 12-lead ECG and the trace at our clinic.

Is a blood type test mandatory for China?

Yes, the official “Foreigner Physical Examination Record” has a specific field for your blood group (A, B, AB, or O) and your Rhesus factor. We include this in your blood panel.

Will I be screened for both HIV and Syphilis?

Yes, these are mandatory infectious disease screenings for China. We provide the certified laboratory reports that must accompany your physical exam form.
