About our Clinic

What is a Marathon Medical

What is a Triathlon Medical?

A Triathlon Pre-Participation Examination (PPE) is a specialized clinical assessment designed to ensure your cardiovascular system can safely handle the extreme physiological demands of endurance racing. Most international governing bodies—including World Triathlon, Ironman, and the FFTri—now mandate these screenings to mitigate the risk of sudden cardiac arrest in competitive sport.

At Midland Medical, we remove the stress of last-minute certification. We have a dedicated team of fully GMC-registered doctors available across 25 locations nationwide, from London to Glasgow. Our clinicians are highly experienced in sports-specific diagnostics and international race requirements, ensuring your paperwork is completed accurately and professionally.

The Midland Medical Process

  1. Seamless Booking: Select your nearest clinic from our 25 UK locations. With 8am–8pm availability 7 days a week, we work around your training block, not the other way around.
  2. On-Site Diagnostics: Upon arrival, your doctor will perform a 12-lead resting ECG and the required physical checks (including Marfan Stigmata screening and cardiac auscultation) using our in-house equipment.
  3. Clinical Consultation: The doctor will review your medical history and ECG results to ensure you meet the rigorous “Fit to Compete” standards required for endurance events.
  4. Instant Certification: Once the assessment is successfully completed, the doctor will sign your specific race forms or provide our official medical certificate on the spot, so you can upload it to your race portal immediately.

FAQs about our Triathlon Medical

How long does a Triathlon Medical Certificate appointment take?

A standard Triathlon Pre-Participation Examination (PPE) typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. Our GMC-registered doctors work efficiently to perform your 12-lead ECG and physical screening, ensuring you get your Fit to Compete certificate without disrupting your training schedule.
Yes, the 12-lead resting electrocardiogram (ECG) is fully included in our £150 fee. Many providers charge extra for cardiac diagnostics, but at Midland Medical, the £150 price covers the doctor’s physical exam, the cardiac screening, and the final signed medical certificate for your race.
Absolutely. Our doctors are highly experienced in completing international triathlon medical forms. Whether you need an Ironman medical certificate, a French Triathlon Federation (FFTri) form, or an Italian sports medical for Gran Fondos, our certificates meet all European and global competitive standards.
In most cases, you will receive your signed sports medical certificate immediately at the end of your appointment. Since we have doctors in 25 UK locations, we can provide same-day medical certificates, allowing you to upload your documents to race portals like Ironman or Active.com instantly.
Governing bodies like World Triathlon and British Triathlon require an ECG for sports to identify “silent” heart conditions such as arrhythmias or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This sudden cardiac death screening is a vital safety requirement for athletes pushing their bodies to the limit.
Yes. We provide weekend sports medicals and evening appointments from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week. With 25 private clinics across the UK, we make it easy for athletes to secure a last-minute triathlon medical outside of standard working hours.
If our doctor identifies a potential issue during your cardiac auscultation or ECG, we cannot sign your fitness to compete form immediately. We will provide you with your ECG trace and a formal referral letter for your GP or a private cardiologist to ensure your safety.
For the most accurate resting ECG and blood pressure reading, we recommend avoiding heavy training, caffeine, and energy drinks for at least 3 hours before your sports medical assessment. This ensures your cardiovascular screening reflects your true baseline health for the PPE examination.
