What is a Taxi Medical

Taxi Driver Medical assessments are required for vocational licensing across all Private Hire (PCO), Hackney Carriage, and other professional driving roles.

This is a mandatory step for both initial licensing and subsequent renewals set by your local council.

Assessments are conducted by our GMC-registered doctors and strictly adhere to the standards set by the DVLA (Group 2 guidelines) and your specific licensing authority. The assessment involves an in-depth review of your medical history, a thorough physical examination covering cardiovascular, neurological, and vision health, and the completion of your specific council’s medical form.

We pride ourselves on offering these medicals at a competitive price and providing flexible appointments, including short-notice, evening, and weekend slots, to ensure minimal disruption to your professional schedule, certifying your fitness to drive safely and legally as a professional taxi driver.

FAQs about our Taxi Medicals

What Does My Council Require for my Taxi Medical?

Requirements for a taxi medical assessment are not standardised across the UK; they differ significantly based on your local licensing council. Prior to your appointment, you must confirm exactly what your authority requires—this could be anything from a complete set of GP medical notes to a simplified summary printout or even specific council-issued medical forms. Verifying these documents beforehand is the critical step to ensuring your medical is accepted promptly and without licensing delays.

Some councils strictly require full GP medical records before your taxi medical appointment. This means you’ll need to proactively request a comprehensive copy from your GP surgery in advance, rather than just relying on a summary or printout from the NHS App, unless your specific council has confirmed they accept those documents. You should contact your GP surgery and ask for a full copy of your records, which you are entitled to receive free of charge under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These records can usually be sent to you by email, collected in person, or accessed through your GP’s online services, depending on their procedures.

We recommend booking as soon as you know your requirements to secure the most convenient date and time, especially for weekend slots.

Most councils in the UK now allow any GMC-registered doctor with access to your medical history to perform the assessment. However, a few specific councils still insist on your own GP. We recommend checking your local council’s licensing policy before booking, though we cover the vast majority of UK authorities.
Yes. Many councils (like Wolverhampton or Birmingham) have specific vision criteria. If you bring your optician’s prescription (less than 6 months old), our doctors can complete the vision section of your council-specific paperwork on the spot.
This varies by council, but typically it is required upon your first application, then every 5 years from age 45, and annually once you reach age 65.
