About our Clinic

Why is a Skydiving Medical required?

While many people can self-declare their fitness, those with certain pre-existing conditions, or those over a specific age, must have their fitness certified by a doctor. This assessment ensures that conditions such as epilepsy, cardiovascular issues, or significant musculoskeletal injuries don’t pose a risk to you or your instructor during the high-pressure environment of a jump.

Specialised Assessment for Freefall

Our assessment focuses on:

  • Cardiovascular Stability: Ensuring your heart can handle the adrenaline surge and altitude changes.
  • Respiratory Health: Checking lung function for high-altitude breathing and pressure changes.
  • Neurological Function: Reviewing history of blackouts, fits, or conditions affecting coordination.
  • Physical Mobility: Ensuring you have the strength and flexibility for a safe landing position (the “PLF” or flare)

If the Doctor is unsure about your fitness they may refer to the Sky Diving Medical Advisor at the British Sky Diving association for further advice with your consent (Home – British Skydiving)

FAQs about Skydiving Medicals

Do I definitely need a doctor's signature?

If you can honestly answer “No” to all questions on the British Skydiving Self-Declaration form, you may not need a doctor. However, if you have a declared condition or are over the age threshold (usually 40+ for some schools), a doctor’s signature on Form 115 is mandatory.
Having a condition doesn’t always mean you can’t jump. Our doctors will assess the stability of your condition against the specific stresses of skydiving to determine if it is safe for you to proceed.
There is no upper age limit for skydiving in the UK, provided a doctor certifies that you are fit to jump.
Skydiving with epilepsy is generally not permitted unless you have been seizure-free and off medication for a significant number of years, as a blackout in the air is life-threatening.
The landing involves a “flare” and often a “PLF” (Parachute Landing Fall). Our doctor will check your knees, ankles, and spine to ensure you can handle the impact of landing.
Once signed by a doctor, the form is valid for the duration specified on the form (usually 1 to 3 years depending on your age and health).
Yes, but instructors require a more rigorous medical (Form 116) which includes a deeper review of your medical history and physical fitness to lead a novice.
