“Recreational scuba diving requires good physical and mental health. There are a few medical conditions which could be hazardous while diving.” -PADI
If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the initial screening questions on the PADI medical form you require a medical carried out by a Doctor.
The medical examination is important as diving can put the body under stress from pressure changes and can increase the risk of fatal accidents underwater.
Our Doctors are trained and experienced in the PADI guidelines and will help you to make a safe decision about fitness to dive.
Conditions we will evaluate include: Asthma, heart problems, ear problems or neurological problems that could lead to loss of conciousness or difficulty co-ordinating yourself.
As part of this medical, the doctor may ask you to obtain clinical letters or reports from a specialist
.
No. A HSE Medical is for commercial divers (divers at work) and is legally required annually. A PADI/Recreational Medical is for recreational divers and is only required if you answer “Yes” to a health question on the PADI self-declaration form.
The Chester Step Test measures your aerobic capacity VO2 max). Scuba diving is physically demanding, so we need to ensure your heart and lungs can handle the exertion of swimming against currents.
As part of the PADI medical, we may test your lung volume and airflow. Any history of asthma must be carefully reviewed to ensure there is no risk of “air trapping” while ascending.
Recreational PADI medical certificates are also typically valid for a year however this depends on the doctor’s discretion and your age.
Most medications aren’t an automatic “No,” but the reason you take them matters. For example, some decongestants or sedatives can be dangerous at depth. We will review your prescription list during the appointment
