About our Clinic

What is a Safety Critical Medical

A Safety Critical Medical is an in-depth health screening for workers whose role involves activities where sudden incapacity could result in a serious incident. These assessments are vital for anyone operating heavy machinery, working at heights, or working on live trackside or roadside projects.

Specialised Assessment for High-Risk Roles

Our assessment focuses on:

  • Visual Acuity: Ensuring you have the distance and peripheral vision needed to operate machinery safely.
  • Hearing Health: Verifying you can hear safety sirens, radio communication, and approaching vehicles.
  • Cardiovascular Stability: Checking for underlying heart conditions that could cause sudden fainting or dizziness.
  • Mobility & Agility: Assessing your ability to climb into cabs, navigate uneven ground, and respond to emergencies.

FAQs about Safety Critical Medicals

Which roles are considered "Safety Critical"?

Common roles include Crane Operators, Forklift Drivers, Scaffolders, Plant Operators, Roadside Workers, and Tunnelling crews. If your employer has told you that you need a “Fit for Work” certificate, this is usually the medical required.
Typically, a Safety Critical certificate is valid for 2 years, though this may vary depending on your age or specific employer requirements.
A standard Safety Critical Medical does not always include drug and alcohol screening unless specifically requested by your employer. Please let us know if you require this additional service when booking.
If you do not meet the initial standard, our doctors will advise you on the next steps, which may include a referral to an optician or your GP for further management so you can be re-tested.
