About our Clinic

When do you need a Private Sick Note?

In the UK, you can usually “self-certify” for the first 7 days of illness. However, some employers, universities, or travel insurance companies require a doctor’s note sooner. We provide certificates for:

  • Short-term illness: Absences of less than 7 days where a company policy requires proof.
  • Ongoing medical conditions: Documentation for extended leave.
  • Academic Mitigating Circumstances: Evidence for missed exams or assignment extensions.
  • Travel Cancellation: Verification for insurance claims due to illness.

Our Certification Process

Our assessment focuses on:

  • Clinical Verification: Reviewing your symptoms and medical history to confirm the need for absence.
  • Duration Assessment: Determining the appropriate timeframe for your recovery and return to work.
  • Workplace Adjustments: Providing advice on “phased returns” or light duties if you are fit for partial work.
  • Official Documentation: Issuing a signed, professional certificate recognized by HR departments and insurers.

FAQs about Private Sick Notes

Can you backdate a sick note?

A doctor can only backdate a note if there is clear evidence of your illness from a previous consultation or medical record. We cannot provide backdated notes for illnesses we have no clinical record of.
Yes. Private medical certificates from GMC-registered doctors carry the same weight as NHS fit notes and are legally recognized by employers across the UK.
Many sick note requests can be handled via a telephone or video consultation, depending on the nature of the illness. Please contact us to see if a remote appointment is suitable for your situation.
You can “self-certify” for the first 7 days of illness. If your employer demands a note before the 7th day, or if you are not registered with an NHS GP, a private doctor can issue a statement.
Most employers accept private fit notes as valid evidence of illness. However, unlike NHS MED3 notes, they are “discretionary” for some benefits. Always check your HR policy first.
A private fit note is typically issued for a maximum of 14 days. If you need longer, a follow-up consultation is usually required to review your progress.
