About our Clinic

What is a Private Hire Medical

We specialise in conducting the essential Private Hire (PHV) Driver Medicals—often referred to as PCO medicals—that you need for your vocational license. Whether you’re applying for a new license or renewing an existing one for Private Hire, Hackney Carriage, or any professional driving role, this check is a mandatory requirement set by your local council.

Your comprehensive assessment will be performed by one of our GMC-registered doctors, ensuring it meets the strict standards set by the DVLA (Group 2 guidelines) and your specific licensing authority. The appointment includes a detailed look at your medical history, a thorough physical exam focusing on your cardiovascular, neurological, and vision health, and the complete, accurate filling out of your council’s medical form.

FAQs about our Private Hire Medicals

Who needs a Private Hire Medical?

Any person applying for a new Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) or Taxi driver licence, or renewing a licence once they reach a certain age (typically 45/50, then annually after 65), must undergo a medical assessment. This medical is mandated by your local Council and must meet the DVLA Group 2 medical standards.

Your local Council requires the medical to be conducted against the DVLA Group 2 (Large Goods Vehicle/Passenger Carrying Vehicle) standards. This is a much stricter standard than a regular driving licence requires, focusing on conditions that could cause sudden incapacitation.

Yes. You will be deemed unfit if you have a condition that is non-compliant with DVLA Group 2 standards. Common reasons include uncontrolled epilepsy, severe heart conditions (like unstable angina), uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension), or uncorrected vision that does not meet the strict standard.

Usually, no. Both fall under the same “Group 2” medical standards required by the local licensing authority. The only difference is usually the specific form provided by your council.
Yes! If you are a self-employed Private Hire driver, the cost of your medical assessment is a professional expense and can usually be claimed back against your tax.
Yes. We understand that a lapsed medical means you cannot work. We prioritize Private Hire drivers by offering same-day or next-day slots in most of our 25 locations to keep you on the road.
