What is a Motorsport Medical

To apply for or renew any competition licence, Motorsport UK requires all applicants to complete a mandatory medical assessment, and at Midland Medical, we provide the necessary examination you need to secure your licence.

While a standard Motorsport Medical typically remains valid for 12 months, the specific requirements vary significantly depending on your age and the licence level you hold:

Motorsport UK Medical Requirements

National Licence Applications

Ages 14–44

  • Vision test (Section 4A)

  • Required once unless previously submitted or vision has changed

Ages 45–59

  • Vision test (Section 4A) every 36 months

Ages 60 and over

  • Doctor’s medical report and resting 12-lead ECG (Section 4B)

FAQs about our Motorsport Medical

How long is my Motorsport UK medical valid?

The medical report is valid for 12 months from the date of the examination. You must submit your license application to Motorsport UK within this window.
If you are under 45, you generally only need a physical exam and vision test. However, an ECG is mandatory if you are applying for an International license, or if you are over a certain age (typically 60+ annually, or at 5-year intervals starting at 45/50 depending on the specific license class).
You must meet a specific visual acuity (usually 6/6 in the better eye and 6/12 in the other). Colour vision is also tested; if you have a colour deficiency, it doesn’t always stop you from racing, but it may restrict you from certain categories.
Our doctors will assess your stability. For higher-level licenses, Motorsport UK may require an “Exercise Stress Test” (ECG while on a treadmill) rather than just a resting one.
Yes. Your doctor will complete and sign your MSUK medical form during the appointment, and you can take it with you immediately.
We recommend a two-piece outfit (trousers and a shirt). For an ECG, we need to place sensors on your chest, so loose clothing makes this process much quicker and more comfortable.
