About our Clinic

What is an ML5 Medical?

About the ML5 Medical

The ML5 is a UK medical fitness certificate required by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). It is designed for those working on small commercial vessels (under 24 meters) or for certain crew members on larger ships. Unlike the ENG1, which is for international voyages, the ML5 focuses on those working in UK coastal waters or on domestic vessels.

Who is it for?

  • Masters and crew of small commercial vessels.
  • Commercial inland waterway skippers.
  • RYA instructors and commercial endorsed Yachtmasters.
  • Workboat and tugboat crew.

What happens during the appointment?

The appointment is straightforward. Our doctor will review your medical history and perform a non-invasive physical exam. We focus on your ability to perform your duties safely at sea, specifically looking at mobility, vision, and any conditions that could cause sudden incapacity.

FAQs about our ML5 Seafarer Medical

How long does the ML5 appointment take at Midland Medical Group?

An ML5 seafarer medical assessment at our Coventry clinic typically takes between 20 to 30 minutes. During this time, our GMC-registered doctor will conduct a thorough review of your medical history and perform the clinical examinations required by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). We understand that seafarers have busy schedules, so we prioritize efficiency to ensure you spend less time in the waiting room and more time on the water.
At Midland Medical Group, we aim to provide a “same-day” service. In the vast majority of cases, your signed and stamped ML5 Certificate of Medical Fitness will be issued to you immediately at the end of your appointment. If your medical history is straightforward and you meet the required physical standards, you will leave our clinic with your paperwork ready to be submitted to the MCA or your employer.
If you have a chronic or pre-existing conditionβ€”such as heart disease, diabetes, or sleep apneaβ€”our doctors will assess how it impacts your ability to work safely at sea. Under MCA guidelines, if a condition is complex, we may be required to refer your form to an MCA Medical Assessor. If this happens, the team at Midland Medical Group will guide you through the referral process and advise you on any additional reports needed from your GP or specialist.
The validity of an ML5 certificate is determined by your age at the time of the examination. For seafarers under the age of 65, the certificate is typically valid for 5 years. For those aged 65 and over, the medical must be renewed annually (every 1 year). Please note that a doctor may occasionally issue a certificate for a shorter duration if a specific medical condition requires more frequent monitoring.
Our ML5 medical assessment includes a standard vision screening (Snellen chart) and a basic color perception test. This is usually sufficient for most applicants. However, if you have a complex prescription or if you do not meet the MCA vision standards during our clinical test, you may be required to visit an optician for a formal ML5 Eyesight Report. We always recommend bringing your most recent glasses or contact lens prescription to your appointment at our clinic.
No, they serve different purposes. An ENG1 must be performed by an MCA-approved doctor and is required for those working on large commercial vessels or international voyages. The ML5 medical at Midland Medical Group is the correct certificate for masters and crew of small commercial vessels (under 24m) and those operating on domestic or coastal UK waters. If you are an RYA instructor or work on a local workboat, the ML5 is usually the standard requirement.
