What is a Firearms Medical

The UK Firearms Medical is a proforma or standardised ‘form’ requiring a registered UK Doctor to review the medical history of a patient applying for or renewing a UK firearm or shotgun licence.

This firearms medical is mandatory according to Home Office guidance. Our doctors are experienced in completing firearms proformas we have to date completed over 100 forms successfully.

The aim of the medical proforma is to identify any conditions which may affect the ability of the patient to hold a firearm e.g. severe depression, psychosis or neurological issues.

Once the form is completed, our medical secretary will promptly request the medical records from your GP practice. Once received our Doctors will complete your form within 3 days of reciept of records.

Once the proforma is completed you will be notified and sent a copy. A copy will also be sent to the firearms officer. This gives the licensing authority the necessary medical evidence to confirm you are fit to hold a certificate and comply with all safety regulations.

Online referral, no appointment required.

No. The medical assessment covers the suitability criteria for both types of certificates. You only need one medical report to be submitted with your single application pack, which covers both the Firearm and Shotgun categories.

A shotgun licence is for sporting shotguns and is less restrictive.
A firearm licence is for rifles and more powerful guns and is much more tightly controlled.

All testing and medical results are highly confidential. Results are handled according to strict GDPR guidelines and are only shared with the relevant Firearms Officer and the patient.

Under guidance from the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC):

A medical proforma is required:

  1. At initial application for a firearms or shotgun licence
  2. At licence renewal (normally every 5 years)
  3. At any time if the police request it, regardless of timing
For a first-time grant, the Home Office requires a review of your entire medical history from birth. For renewals, most police forces now require a minimum 10-year check, though some still request the full history to ensure no historic “red flag” conditions (like substance abuse or severe mental health episodes) have been missed.

The police are specifically looking for history regarding:

  • Mental Health: Depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, mania, or PTSD.
  • Neurological: Epilepsy, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, or multiple sclerosis.
  • Substance Use: Any history of alcohol or drug misuse.
  • Personality: Evidence of emotional volatility or personality disorders.
Once your certificate is granted, a digital “flag” is placed on your NHS record. This ensures that if you are diagnosed with a new relevant medical condition during the 5-year life of your license, your GP is prompted to notify the police. This “continuous monitoring” is a key part of UK firearms law.
No. This is a common misconception. The doctor’s role is solely to provide a factual statement based on your medical records. We do not offer an opinion on your suitability; the final decision to grant or refuse a license rests entirely with the Police Firearms Licensing Manager.
