About our Clinic

What is a Adoption Medical

The adoption medical is a mandatory health assessment for all prospective adoptive parents, forming a critical part of the approval process. Conducted by your GP using the standard CoramBAAF Adult Health (AH) Form, its purpose is to ensure you are physically and mentally robust enough to meet the long-term needs of an adopted child. The assessment involves a review of your medical and mental health history, a physical examination, and consideration of your lifestyle. The final report is used by the agency’s Medical Advisor to provide an expert opinion on your longevity and capacity to parent, assuring the adoption panel that you can offer a stable home.

Agencies have strict rules, especially for children under 5. While smoking doesn’t always “fail” the medical, it is a significant factor the agency considers during the “Home Study” phase.
This varies. Some local authorities cover the cost, while others ask the applicants to pay the
Generally, an adoption medical is valid for updates every 2 years, though foster carers may require more frequent health reviews depending on their local authority rules.
