About our Clinic

Why is an ACU/FIM Medical required?

Motorcycle racing demands exceptional physical control, rapid reactions, and cardiovascular endurance. The Auto-Cycle Union (ACU) and FIM require medical examinations—especially for Road Racing, those over age 50, or those with specific health histories to ensure that riders do not pose a risk to themselves or others on the track.

The assessment focuses on:

  • Vision & Depth Perception: Ensuring you can accurately judge distances and react to track flags and hazards.
  • Neurological Integrity: Checking coordination, balance, and reflexes essential for high-speed maneuvering.
  • Cardiovascular Fitness: Assessing your heart’s ability to handle the extreme physical stress of racing.
  • Hearing Standards: Verifying you meet the minimum hearing requirements for track safety.

Dont forget to bring with you

FAQs about ACU/FIM Medicals

Who needs an ACU Medical?

Typically, riders applying for Road Race, Drag, or Sprint licences, and any rider over the age of 50 (or 70 for certain disciplines), will require a doctor-signed medical.
Our doctors can perform the standard vision screening. However, if your specific licence tier requires an optician’s signature specifically, please check your form before booking.
For FIM licenses, riders over 50 years old (except in Trials) must have an Exercise Tolerance (Stress) ECG. We can arrange this specialized test for you.
We check your visual acuity and, crucially, your peripheral vision and colour recognition. You must be able to see flags and other riders clearly in your “side view.”
The medical is valid for your license year, but the examination must have been performed within the last 12 months.
If you wear glasses or contacts, bring your latest optician’s prescription. The ACU form has a specific “Eyesight Report” section that our doctor will complete.
